Fashion Fridays!

Dear Ethers,

I’m shocked it’s another Friday.  It felt like yesterday I was slipping on my little pleated dress and writing my post.  The weeks are flying by……it’s kind of scary actually.  But none of this deep talk!  No sireee!  This is fashion baby, and a Friday to boot and we want to have fun, right?

As you know I root for anything with an elastic waist.  So, I am donning the most fashionable item of clothing that allows me to wear something without a zipper or buttons.  Yep—leggings.  I’ve sung their praises on this blog a zillion times so I won’t tell you how versatile, easy and how they have become the new jean—but I will say that I will be living in them until Vogue or Glamour or whoever the fuck the arbiter of fashion these days is says they must be binned. And you know what?  Even THEN I will wear them to small Eastern European countries who think they are still hip.  In fact, I will ONLY travel to such places because they will think I am on the cutting edge of the catwalk and will envy my stretchy leg coverlets.

I’m wearing a really fun camisole that I think would look as cool with leggings as they would with jeans.  The top  sort of has a 70’s/80’s “I’m a babe” disco attitude which I like—and the back has—guess what—elastic banding!  Could this top be better suite for me?

The shoes—you either love them or hate them.  I’ll tell you what will make you decide.  You hate moccasin fringe-like shoes or you totally dig them.  I am all about the latter.  I always wanted some fringed shoes but thought they had been overdone by now.  But when I saw them in this cool sandal form in a sleek black, and they were comfy as hell, I said, yep, slip those on my tootsies and call them my own.

I like this outfit because this is just a normal, everyday get-up.  This is something I would run out and get the groceries in or would meet a mate for brunch and a coffee wearing.  Is it jaw-dropping?  No.  But it is young, fun and has a bit more pizzaz than a crappy track-suit and trainers and I feel as comfortable.  I also think it has a beat of its own and unlike all the pastel wearing, glittery girls that can be so L.A., I like to bring a bit of dark casual to the streets here ;)

So happy weekend, and I’ll catch up with you tomorrow.  I am seriously overwhelmed with writing—both my deadlines for pieces are due Monday.  I’m writing a fun shoe piece and a really fab style piece about a very famous dress.  More details to come.  One will be a main feature in a major newspaper.  I’m pretty psyched.  But—I wanna impress because if it goes well, this is the direction I want my career to be going in.  I would love red carpets to be simply a dyed rug in my past.

And speaking of red carpets…let’s roll out one for Fashion Fridays!

Dedicatedly yours,

—One of 365

Casual, easy, fun, youthful and just a really easy way to be laid-back and look put together without having to dawn that horrible tracksuit. It's as convenient but has a little more pizzaz and is a bit more "now." I think the tracksuit, although will always be on the market, has sadly seen its day :(

I don

I don't know why, but I feel like I'm conjuring Drew Barrymore when I'm wearing this top. It's really fun, 80's, whimsical and somewhat child-like but cut for an adult. I don't know if you can see the little ribbons on either side of the bodice, but they are a cute add on to the camisole. I like the tight top half and the loose bottom ruffle drape. I suppose you could dress this up, but the material is not very fancy and I think it's a cool "throw on and run out of the house" piece. Stars Camisole, 10 pounds, Topshop, London

Yes! Viva La Elastic Waist! C

Yes! Viva La Elastic Waist! C'mon girls....you know if you could make couture and hip clothes with an elastic waist you would vote yay. But, sadly, elastic waist= super Wal-Mart style. Leggings are one of the only items we can get away with these days with a whole lot of stretch unless we're pregnant, so LOVE IT! I have these in brown as well and I wear them everywhere. I look better in them when I'm not shoveling cookies down my gob and going to the gym, but they are a happy piece of cloth for me. And a bargain too. Black Leggings, $6.99, Target, Los Angeles

So, as I said before, you either love em' or you hate em'! I love em'....they are really boho fun and easy to walk in for hours. They are a great alternative then just throwing on a pair of crappy black flip-flops. The only negative is that the laces become unravelled sometimes, but besides that, the sole is comfy and they have great ankle support. I like them with the fun and youthful top and I'm glad I got them in black so I can wear them a little more dressy than I would be able to do with a more rugged brown. Paul & Joe Sister-The Wish List (Navy Seal Of Approval)

Dear Ethers,

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (arms stretching behind my back).  The Wish List is back!  What tremendous joy I had shopping again, choosing dream pieces without having to lay down my credit card.  Though one day I would like to place an order on some of the glorious goodies I’ve chosen, it’s always fun to fantasize and see something come together from a collection that you’ve chopped and changed.  I mean, of course I imagine myself with a Kate Moss frame when I select such pieces so I also imagine that they would look stellar on me.  But sadly, this girl whose stature of 5′6 and with a bust larger than a 32A would not look catwalk cool.  But that’s what’s so fun about Monday’s.  You can dream!

Today is all about navy blue bliss.  I don’t think this lovely shade gets enough credit and I really love wearing it.  It looks surprisingly good with denim, excellent with white, brilliant with black (just kidding…wanted to see if you were paying attention) and is just a classy, classic color.  I also think it’s a great transitional hue both seasonally and day to night.  Navy can be worn both in the summer and the winter and for work and drinks.

I chose Paul & Joe Sister this week because I really like the playful French fun that they have in their collection this season.  It’s kind of Topshop meets rockstar. Love it!  For a diffusion line it isn’t THAT expensive, though I wouldn’t call it cheap—but compared to something like Miu Miu it’s a steal (I mean, they sell it in Urban Outfitters!).  I also thought it would be fun to integrate beauty into this Wish List because Paul & Joe have such a comprehensive line.

I have mixed feelings about their make-up line.  The packaging is gorgeous.  I think the palettes and the colors for shadows and foundations have tremendous variety.  However, I think it is way too expensive for a brand that isn’t established.  It’s tricky.  You can’t really start off cheaper and then hike up prices.  But a lot of folks haven’t heard of Paul & Joe and therefore wouldn’t pay 30 bucks for a lipstick when blingalicious Chanel is right around the corner with competitive prices. Truthfully, at the end of the day, the double C’s are gonna win out.  I know the line does well in Europe, but I think it is really struggling in the United States.  The packaging is targeted for a younger audience, but again, the price tag is for an older audience.  Anyway, in case it’s new too you, I thought I’d introduce you to it.

So here’s our girl.  She’s going out in L.A. during the day but it’s going to transition to a nighttime hang out too.  She’s got her lightweight dress because it’s sill hot during the day, but she’s brought a long, cozy cardigan when it gets chilly during the evening (hey, chivalry is dead—you can’t rely on gentlemen to offer you their coats anymore!).  Her boots are perfect for walking around in because of the extra gooey, padded platform and if she wants she can stick a pair of tights in her bag if her gams get cold.  She’s brought along some perfume just in case she wants to freshen up, and she’s done up her eyes in this lovely palette that matches the colors of the pattern on her dress perfectly.    This is not a party evening, just a laid back time with friends where she wants to look hip and chic but also be comfortable.  So, welcome back to the Wish List and enjoy our navy nymph.

Meow! This cat print silk dress with a ruffle detail is cute and sexy at the same time. I love how it's got a baggy top that makes it slouchy and casual, but also that dainty skirt which is attached that is short and flirty allowing you to show off those legs. Great for a hot summer day. Or, throw on some tights and voila, you've got your evening look. The sleeves end mid-arm so great for the hip bangle look and again, because this shows so much leg, wait until you see this paired with the rad ankle boots our chica is sporting. How lovely is this cardigan? It looks handmade by someone you love...awww! I think it's the perfect color. An added bonus? It's the same length as the dress, so you'll be totally toasty when night falls! This is a great piece to own because it's a classic. It'll never date because it already has a vintage feel. You could probably wear this as a sweater dress---just add some leggings and some cute boots and you're ready to go. Navy Deneuve Cardigan, $321.75, paul&joe.com

Truthfully, I chose this fragrance because of the color of the bottle--hey, I'm not gonna lie to you. And honestly, that's what happens a lot in consumer magazines. Products are chosen for their looks and not always for their quality. However, I own this fragrance and it is sweet--literally. Would I run out and buy it? No, but it was given to me for free and sometimes in the summer when I want to smell sweet and fun I'll spritz it on. The Web says it is a sexy, oriental and musky scent. I don't know if I'd agree. Celine-The Wish List (The Start Of Fall Fashion)

Dear Ethers,

Hark! It is September.  Does this mean the leaves are starting to change and it’s going to get chilly?  Where did Summer go?  I still have white, strapless dresses that have tags still attached and sandals that don’t even have scuff marks on their bottoms.  Well, thank goodness I live in Los Angeles, but for most of the world this means the changing of the closet!  Unwrapping those cashmere sweaters, buying new wooden cedar hanger inserts, and starting to say good-bye to the romper trend. (For some of you that’s a “thank-god.” Though, owning a cute silk butterscotch Marc Jacobs one myself, I loved it!).  So, to debut our Fall look I decided on the lovely Celine which is oh so French, and oh so divine, that you can’t help but look sophisticated in its luxurious fabrics and its “I didn’t try too hard” look.  I know when the seasons start to change I wanna be cozy.  I hate being unprepared for the weather outside and being itchy with bad wool or sweaty by being swamped by too much fabric.  I like light layers that keep me warm.  The Fall is great for layering lightly while experimenting with fabrics that will mesh with your lifestyle.

The outfit I’ve chosen is the one I would have liked my mom to have picked me up in school wearing and proudly beamed, “Yep, that’s her, that’s the queen of chic.”  My mom tended to enjoy the art of schlep, which is fair enough, but I swore if I ever had kids, I’d always look fab when I was around them so they could be proud of me fashion-wise.  Hey, I’ll never be Kate Moss, but I can be a fashion icon to someone, right?  The Celine look is great because it’s comfy with sumptuous fabrics so you could work in the ensemble and then chill out with the kids after school or a friend after work and not need to change.  The over-the-knee boot look is a Fall staple so girl, you are right on trend!  The ruffled front of the blouse is also tres chic for the season (collars, ruffled fronts–all to be on your tick list).  The over-sized sweater is cut fashionably so it doesn’t look like it’s eating you alive, just comfortably acting like a warm layer.  The leggings are always perfect–hey–you know me—elastic waist=perfection.  And finally, the bag is really adorable because it’s an unusual color with a bit of shearling and suede so you aren’t looking SO heavy and dark for winter yet.  So, shall we “Fall” in love with this look?

Dedicatedly yours,

 —One of 365

This lovely wool-blend wrap coat is a perfect shade of grey. It's not too dark so it transitions well into Fall rather than a heavier charcoal which would be better for Winter. It has a kimono-style fit so sleeves will look lovely billowing out of it and you can even replace the tie it comes with using your own leather cinched waist belt to dress it up. This silk and cotton ruffle front blouse has a look of "sheer" comfort. It is light so you won't be sweating underneath your wool wrap coat, but it is not flimsy enough to cut right through to the skin. I love the color. I think the taupe is such a unique match with the gray and works so beautifully together. It's not a color combination you'd expect and yet it is seamless in its compatibility. This is again, all about comfort. This is not too form fitting, yet it is still flattering enough to show off your silhouette without constraining your body. The ruffled sleeves will look heavenly edging out from the coat. Cotton-Blend Ruffle Blouse, $760, celine.com

These have become the new staple of every woman's wardrobe. They ARE the new jean. This will be the perfect comfort piece with the elastic waist and the cotton-wool blend. Their versatility and easiness is just A+ and you can dress them up or down. Cotton-Wool Blend Leggings, $495, celine.com

The fit has to be excellent. No droopiness. No bagginess. These have to show off those gams. Don't give up. You will find a pair. They are out there for a price you can afford. Just don't succumb to the cheap, call-girl look, okay? Wear over leggings with a short top like we are doing with this outfit and you'll look relaxed and chic. Wear dressed with a tunic. Wear over jeans! These are really gonna take over fashion. If only these were cheaper. Oh Celine!!!! But anyway, how gorgeous is this going to look with our Fall debut outfit? Fashion Fridays! (Redemption From 08/28/2009 Edition)

Dear Ethers,

My sincerest apologies for last week’s debacle.  I made a fashion faux pas.  I let you down with my end of week clothing choice pairing a fabulous jacket, amazing shoes, a beautiful top, a lovely necklace and (though there is some debate about this one) a beautiful skirt together to make my self look like a 40 year old bridge player (See Last Week: Fashion Friday). I know many of you felt that the skirt was too old for me.  I am very 50/50 on this.  It is a Nicole Farhi skirt and in person it literally looks like a watercolor painting on pleated fabric.  I used to be heavier than I am now.  Many of my clothes are too big for me and therefore don’t flatter.  I mentioned this in the post—–it hit me poorly in the leg and I had to wear something over the skirt to cover up the sagging waistline.  In hindsight, I never should have even shown the skirt at all.  I HAVE brought back a relic from last week to show you how frickin’ fab a piece of that outfit is when put together correctly.  You’ll remember it when you see it.  So again, do not lose faith from my blunder.  Out of 52, I hope to only fail once or twice making the rest of the weeks a success.  Hey, I haven’t done too badly so far, right?

So, to make up for the horrors of last week, I went all out for you Ethers.  I went for the uber grand.  Lush velvet trousers from Chloe, stunning beaded jacket from Reiss………it really is damned lovely.  I will say, the Chloe’s are slightly too big (I told you, I have lost weight since their purchase) but this time they work in a cool, slouch kind of way.  Excited?

So…you know how I wrote about the Russian Revolution taking over makeup (See Beauty Post: Beauty Trend: Say “Da” For Russia!)?  Well, this week our girl has taken on that trend in fashion and is our Russian devushka.  She’s wearing lush fabrics, sensuous colors and the neckline on the shirt reminds me of the Chanel ads of the models wearing high-neck, severe collars.  She’s come West for a day of shopping.  (Yeah, well, most  of us would wear this to a cocktail event).  Her chaffeur is taking her to all of the high-end shops to enhance her already luxe wardrobe and then she’s off to a very dimly lit restaurant to dine with ex-pats for a meal in a heavily decorated private room.  She’s not too trendy.  Her look is classy, but her pieces are individual.  The materials are unique and you can tell are fine quality.  Though she isn’t wearing something straight off the catwalk and looking ridiculously over the top, you can tell she knows her fashion, but she also knows the limits of class.  Her English is perfect as is her French and she has a penchant for Jane Austen AND Catherine the Great (and maybe a soft spot for the silly Marie Antoinette). Let’s take a look at our revised Fashion Friday and say “pri-Vet” (Hello) to Madame X.

Ya Loo-Bloo Tibia Tor-Ja (I love you as well) Ethers!  Enjoy! (Aren’t you proud of my Russian!?)

Kra-si-va-ya! (Beautiful!) The colors match perfectly. From the burgundy in the trousers and the top to the whites in the pattern in the shirt and the coat. Notice our old friends from last week poking out from the hemline of the trouser bottom? Yeah, they don

Notice our old friends from last week poking out from the hemline of the trouser bottom? Yeah, they don't look too "babushka" like now, do they? And the bracelet with the purple hues and a vintage feel with the cameo. The details are so much prettier in person. If you could see it live, the colors and the effect---so much more dazzling. Trust me, this is MUTED compared to how luscious this outfit really is.

You know when you go into a store at the beginning of a season and see something and pray that if any are left, when the sales start, that there will be on in your size. And if there is one in your size, the mark-down price will still be cheap enough to afford? I visited Reiss every 3 days during the Winter sales and watched this jacket. It vanished from store to store. I was devastated. And then on a fluke, I had come from a PR meeting and there was a Reiss in Covent Garden and I went in and I saw my glittering jacket. It vanished from store to store. I was devastated. And then on a fluke, I had come from a PR meeting and gloomily walked into a Reiss in Covent Garden. I went in and, SHOCK, I saw my glittering jacket. I knew it was about 100 quid too much and they wouldn't have my size. I first looked at the price tag. My hands started to shake. The fucking thing had been marked down to 49 pounds (from almost 300 pounds). Trembling, the first one was an x-small. I thought if I had to, I would cut out all bread, meat and only eat greens. But then, I fingered the tag of the one next to it and it was A SMALL!! I looked to see if it was missing sequins or a button. It was perfect. "That was just returned today," the sales girl said. "Bargain." I have worn this jacket on very few occasions. It is extremely delicate, slightly heavy, and beyond spectacular. It is one of my favorite finds. Our Russian girl probably would have paid full price and snagged it without the anxiety, but Ethers, let's come back to reality and step away from our Fashion Friday's story for a moment. This set of digits didn't have the cash flow our Faberge fashionista did....but man....when I wear it I feel like catwalk queen Natalia Vodianova. This is a really lovely cotton top that is elegant and has a pleasant paisley pattern that meshes perfectly with the flow of the outfit. It really is there to work as a color layer for the look but mainly I chose it for it's Edwardian-esque collar. I LOVE how high and ruffled the neck is (hard to see in the photo). I think if you have a long, lean, neckline this is such an elegant piece because it pokes out from the jacket and makes a statement that you don't need to make any longer with jewelery. Collars and ruffled fronts are very in right now so this is a great little addition to the wardrobe. Burgundy Blouse, $50, Banana Republic, Los Angeles

I've always thought of velvet as epitomizing this. Even a touch of velvet in a hair ribbon, or on a bow of a shoe...it can add such elegance. I love how our girl has so many different fabrics. I love the casual cut of the trouser, but the statement the color and fabric make. This is a dress pant, but done young and hip. QVC: The Wish List (Yep, You Heard Me Right!)-Italian Vacation Edition

Dear Ether,

So, when we think of QVC and fashion, one image comes to mind:

This sexy gingham button down embroidered shirt and capri set--it can be yours for $56.26 from the Quacker Factory, QVC.com

This is their typical fashion item: a sexy gingham button down embroidered shirt and capri set--it can be yours for $56.26 from the Quacker Factory, QVC.com

OKAY—this is why we think of QVC as the LAST place we’d ever go for fashion bargain hunting or trends.  But, on my weekly internet mission to find a cute collection from an online store’s stock, I amazingly was able to put together a comprehensive look that you would NEVER guess was from the “dare not speak its name” shopping channel.  Look, the truth is it took me FOREVER to find an outfit that I thought would be cute, on trend, and acceptable.  I’m not saying I would flock to QVC after visiting their site, but it definitely opened my eyes to the fact that they do have some stuff that is on offer for young folks.  They are attempting to gain a hipper customer with some up and coming designers and if you’ve got a good eye and need some basics, you’ll fare well.

So this week I decided to fashion my look as if I were going to Italy during the summer holidays.  I think it is very European, a bit Audrey Hepburn and a slight nod to the 60’s.  Picture your very own oneof365 with a brown chignon, a mint green Vespa, this outfit and chatting with a handsome Italian man (or men…why the hell not, it’s a fantasy…) while having an espresso and a quick smoke leaving only a lipstick stained cigarette butt in my wake!  The clothes are perfect for the Italian heat, but great for when it gets a bit chillier at night.  Okey doke–let’s see how this American lady turned herself into an Italian Contessa—-budget style baby!

Dedicatedly yours,

—One of 365

This was the first item I saw on QVC and inspired my whole look. I loved the pastel pink trench look with the wrist-length sleeves and the funky white buttons. The fabric looked stiff and crisp and I thought it would look fab with tanned skin, and a bit of pink lip gloss with a slight frost a-la 60's fashion. Perfect to leave open and show off what you have underneath or to button up and keep a bit warmer at night when the sun goes down. Chloe Dao Stretch Cotton Twill Double Breasted Jacket w/ Rear Pleat. Great 60

Great 60's suave to this pocketed and zippered sateen tank dress. Open up the zip at the neck to show of the decollete, and cover your arms with loads of bangles or maybe wear with an oversized gold watch which would go really well with the gilded hardware. Has a real swinging vibe, but also a sophisticated Portofino look--it's breezy and chic at the same time. The navy goes beautifully with the pink from the trench. Linea by Louis Dell'Olio Sateen Tank Dress w/ Zipper Detail Originally $49.50 on sale for $34.12, QVC.com

I adore how these peep-toe, sling-backs are are so reminiscent of the sea that the leather actually looks like scales from a mermaid

I adore how these peep-toe, sling-backs are are so reminiscent of the sea that the leather actually looks like scales from a mermaid's tale! These are great for shopping in the Italian boutiques (ahhh...Prada, Ferragamo, Gucci!) because the heel-height isn't too limiting and they let air in so your feet breathe and don't swell. The shoe has a very vintage feel about them--they almost look handmade. Lovely People Ruffled Leather Platform Quarter Strap Sandals $115, QVC.com

This supple stone colored bag is a great travel bag because it can hold a lot but still look very sleek and fashionable--perfect for the chic traveller. Could this bangle bracelet be more perfect! When I saw this I said Belissima! What a great homage to old Italy and what a fun conversation piece. A really funky, but also classic piece of jewellery that literally has stood the test of time. Hey, and if you run out of money, maybe you can try and go to the bank and exchange the bracelet for some Euros? No, probably not. Nice thought though ;) Lire Coin Bangle Bracelet 14k $219, QVC.com
